Hello everyone! Happy to help jumpstart the Healthy & Safe Water for the World International Conference onJuly 8-11, 2008 in Mubende, Uganda.

Willy has already posted in Omidyar.Net and he, Dr. Dickson Ssenoga and Joseph Luyinda have met to brainstorm ideas. I think it is best to wait til after the Chicago Conference in mid-July before we uplift the thread more in O-Net. just out of courtesy and to support others first. After that I think it will be appropriate for us to go ahead and start a campaign to mobilize and motivate others to join our cause. The message is to raise more awareness and the create a critical mass of people to take action together to eradicate WDI. Thanks for the Rural Health Care Foundation staff for taking the lead to make this a reality.;)

We need to brainstorm regarding acquiring sponsors, donors, grants, funding for the conference. We also need to have a place in O-Net and in the wiki for a sign-up of those who are interested in going. We shall need the e-mail addresses. Marissa, where can we have a sign-up page? We need names of participants, e-mail addresses, phones, addresses. I can help organize over here and will e-mail the participants on an on-going basis to help with cultural and motivational preparation for the trip. The great thing is that we have a wiki - thanks to Marissa! Willy, please post all that you have done already. I know that you have sent communications with many water NGOs already.

Regarding field trip and missions: visiting with the orphaned children of AIDS. I would l love to know the children's names. And the guardians. Photographs. Their ages. Perhaps connect them with the participants so by the time we go there, we already know the children by name. Visiting schools. Art. Music. Dance. Computer education. I am sure that you all have even better ideas.

We need to agree on the new name of our team. CLEAN WATER FOR THE WORLD TEAM (CWW team) sounds simple and good to me. And it is in the wiki and our website already. Are we all okay with Healthy & Safe Water for the World International Conference (HSWWIC)- or Clean Water for the World International Conference (CWWIC)? Just thinking about short and simple and easy to remember. Let us discuss.

A Welcoming and Greeting Committee: airport, hotel and lodging; food, taxi/vans, boda-bodas. I recommend that each of the participants be responsible for their payments. This is less confusing and encourages more accountability. Perhaps by getting a block for the conference we can get discounts for people.

By Mid-July I will contact Dehoney Travel for mission flight rates. Participants will need to get their passports and also I will update everyone regarding the health care and immunization needs. Let us continue the dialogue. And more ideas. I am open to all. These are just my thoughts for now.

Introduction

There are many partnership, alliances networks, and even individuals existing within the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation sectors who are striving to provide safe clean water to the poor disadvantaged communities in the world.The Clean Water for the World Team is a group of like-minded people inviting you to attend a HEALTHY & SAFE WATER FOR THE WORLD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on 8th -11th JULY 2008, Mubende UGANDA. 5 billion children in developing countries are diagnosed with diarrhea each year.
1.8 million of these children die from diarrheal illness due to drinking unclean safe water or ingesting contaminated food. Diarrhea caused by drinking contaminated water kills more people than HIV/AIDS or malaria. Diarrhea kills one child every 3 minutes. In today’s world, water is more than a source of life. Deprivation linked to water is a source of poverty, of inequality, of social injustice, and of great disparities in life chances. That is deprivation because water is a human right - none of us should turn a blind eye to the violation of human rights. STOP WATER BORNE ILLNESS (WDI). Clean Water For the World. We believe every individual has power to make a difference

Purpose

Access to clean safe water for the world conference will provide opportunities for water quality individuals, donors, organizations, communities engage in providing clean water for the world; extension and education to share knowledge and ideas, to identify and update emerging issues concerning water borne illness through creating networks internationally. The first Healthy& Safe Water For The World international conference will focus on experience and actions from Uganda, but also from all around the world, providing invaluable lessons learning with the potential to inform local actions, internationally provide solutions, knowledge to the problems affecting water, hygiene and sanitation sector. It will provide a global forum for practitioners, organizations, donors, agencies, from a wide range of disciplines who are working in the water and environmental sanitation sectors, to share their knowledge and experience on the conference them through various types of presentation, and also through the opportunity to have personal interaction and the discussion time both formally and informally. There will be the chance to join in the field and mission trips to see examples of activities need to be done in the community and the work done in the community in Mubende, Uganda

CONFERENCE THEMES

Those which relate to topical issues are particularly encouraged. As part of the main themes, we invite papers and presentations on the following specific issues, for potential inclusion in specialist sessions, although this list is by no means exhaustive.

· Potential benefits and hazards associated with water marketing and privatization of the water supply industry
· Scientific studies versus environmental advocacy for dealing with water treatment, water quality and health issues, to include emphasis on benefits and hazards of chlorination or other methods for disinfection, fluoridation and other water treatment methods
· Growing concerns for drinking water contamination from pharmaceuticals and other products used to promote good health in humans and animals
· Land-based management practices versus enhanced water treatment by utilities to meet drinking water quality standards for surface sources

Ø We are a group of committed individuals and organizations who are collaborating to: Ø 1. Raise awareness about the need for clean and safe water for the world and the eradication of Waterborne Diarrheal Illnesses (WDI).

3. Create global collaboration among organizations and individuals who want to uplift the mission. RURAL HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION, UGANDA. Rural Health Care Foundation is a non-profit community based grass roots organization formed with the intention of improving the health status in rural areas of Uganda.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

1. To promote reduction in transmission of HIV/AIDS among the community through
behavior change.

2. To train HIV/AIDS orphans in vocation skills to achieve quality life and make
them self reliant.

3. To support and advocate for disabled people especially women and children and
give them skills to sustain themselves .

4. To promote food security and modern agriculture.

5. To support infected and affected people with HIV/AIDS

6. To improve house hold income levels especially to women and youth

7. To support Rural Communities to improve their water hygiene and sanitation. Expected outcomes - communities access clean safe water in the world; decrease in diarrhea illness.What we need to achieve - make 20 litres of clean freshwater for each person, everyday, a recognized and upheld human right.
Ensure that no household spends more than 3% of its income on water.
Ensure that the poor get water for free. Governments must make clean water and sanitation a national priority and provide funding for development projects. Governments and community groups must work together to device locally appropriate solutions to water and sanitation problems. International aid donors must fund water and sanitation projects. Centralized water treatment and distribution systems are expensive and take years to complete. A progress report from FIMRC -Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children from Geoff DeLizzio

Dear Members,

FIMRC has begun work on its fight to curb water borne illness in the village of Bumwalukani, Uganda. The first step is to perform a needs assessment and collect the necessary data on family water usage in the surrounding villages. The needs assessment was complete during the months of January and February 2007 by myself and FIMRC’s current Field Operations Manager, Ms. Amy Hessing. FIMRC provides direct, primary medical care to a catchment area of approximately 12,000 individuals. The clinic sees roughly 30 patients per day, 6 days a week. We found that after Malaria, Helminthiasis caused by water borne parasites is the second leading cause of illness among all of our patients. While it is difficult to track the exact number of those who have died of parasitic worms, there is no question that this is a large mitigating factor in many reported deaths in our area, especially among the demographic 5 years of age and younger.

Over 70% of the region receives its water from local streams and rivers which are biologically contaminated. The remaining percentage collects its water from wells and/or harvested rain water. With low levels of education, specifically health education, it is difficult for the population to draw a connection between something they cannot physically see in their drinking water and why they are getting sick. For those using wells and harvested rain water, contamination happens primarily by poor storage conditions.

FIMRC is grateful for the matching funds provided by the Omidyar Network. Currently we have begun to use these funds to provide much needed health education to a variety of village groups. Each lesson provides simple instructions for creating and storing potable water, a real life example of boiling and filtering water (for our altitude water must be boiled for over 4 minutes), and customary to the culture we provide tea at the end of every lesson. After we create a variety of culturally specific lesson plans, the next stage is to reach wider audiences. FIMRC plans to accomplish this with two methods. The first is to create a water sanitation video that will be finished sometime this summer (a copy of which we will gladly provide the group upon its completion).

Our Doctors, Health Outreach Coordinators, and Field Operations Managers on site provide routine house calls throughout the village. During this time we will bring a portable DVD player and show the video, allowing FIMRC to reach those that are unable to attend meetings yet still get the full effect of the lesson. We found that including technology makes our work more efficient, but also intrigues and entices the local population to watch and learn. The second method will be to hire local Water Sanitation Workers.
As unemployment is drastically high in this rural region of Eastern Uganda, we are always looking to provide the local population with opportunities to receive training and a trade skill, as well as a reasonable wage. To reach a wider audience in educating about water borne illness, we are implementing a Training of Trainers (ToT) program. We will train and pay local workers to go throughout the village and teach their own lessons, reporting their numbers weekly back to our clinic. This increases our outreach exponentially and we have already seen success with other training opportunities surrounding the clinic.

As I am sure many of you know, working in a third world and developing world country provides us with many challenges. Implementing any new program in such an environment takes time. FIMRC prides itself on creating programs which are well thought through, tested, and most importantly, sustainable. Dirty water which was purified.

RHCF is so gratetful for the purifier donation from New Life International together with the STOP WDI crew. This is the only water purifier in the whole of Mubende district. Water purification exercises has been done on a weekly basis in the villages of Nabikakala and Ntugamo parishes and in about 8 points where there are water ponds and according to our survey, these areas report a high complaint on water related illnesses. The measurement of the purifier performance will be done after a year because Mubende district is so Big that we cannot penetrate every village and the rate at which water borne diarrheal illiness are reduced can not be noticed in just a short while. We have designed a questionaire to assess the prevalence of water borne diarrheal illness in our community that we will also use after are year to compare what will be present.

During water purification in the village, more than 500 litres purified in one
day.

Challenges / Problems.

Some low community have wellcomed the purification of water but they don't trust in the water purifier. They give comment, that "this white man's machine will kill us" So There is more need of sensitization in water Hygiene & Sanitation.
The Long distances at which the purifier must be taken and some of the volunteers do not want to go far.

Way Forward we need more big tanks and pipes to put them on the high hills so that we can purifiy it there after supplying it to the community.
